Yungang Grottoes, China - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Yungang Grottoes, China

Weather: Mainly cloudy, 59/86F.

Route: From Peking Man museum 358 km west on G18.

Significance: These statues were carved in the 5th and 6th centuries during the reign of the Norther Wei dynasty.  Although there are many carvings of Buddha's in the caves, the largest statues were of the Northern Wei leaders.
