Significance: The island of Samos has been occupied since prehistory in the 6th millennium BC. The main sites recognized by UNESCO are the ancient city of Pythagoreion and the temple of Hera, built in the 8th century BC. Another unique feature of Samos is a 6th century BC aqueduct tunnel, one of the first known tunnels built for that purpose.
