Significance:  Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th centuries. Angkor Wat is one of the most iconic temples in Southeast Asia. It was initially designed as a Hindu Temple, but then became a Buddhist Temple in the 12th century.

Sukhothai, Thailand - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Sukhothai, Thailand

Weather: Generally sunny with a few afternoon clouds, 69/96F.

Route: From Ayutthaya 356 km north on AH2 and Route 117.

Significance: Sukhothai was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries, prior to moving to Ayutthaya.  Like Ayutthaya, it has many prang (towers) and Buddhist sculptures, including one Buddhist sculpture that is 15 meters high.

Ayutthaya, Thailand - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Ayutthaya, Thailand

Weather: Sunshine and clouds mixed, 74/91F.

Route: From Bangkok 78 km north on AH2.

Significance: Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam from 1350 to 1767, when it was destroyed by the Burmese.  The city has many towers, called prang, which were built to honor their kings.  There are also many statues of the Buddha and Buddhist monasteries.

Borobudur Temple Compounds, Indonesia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Borobudur Temple Compounds, Indonesia

Significance: This temple was built in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is a large pyramid shaped building. If the walls were put into a straight line it would stretch for 5 kilometers. These walls are decorated with reliefs of the Buddha and his life. There are also 72 Buddhas in stupas.

Prambanan Temple Compounds, Indonesia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Prambanan Temple Compounds, Indonesia

Significance: This is the largest Hindu Temple Complex in Indonesia - these temples were built between the 8th and 10th centuries.  The complex is mostly dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and creation.  The complex is made up of 240 temples.

Sangiran Early Man Site, Indonesia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Sangiran Early Man Site, Indonesia

Significance: This area of Java has yielded as many early hominid fossils as anywhere in the world. Explorations starting in the 1930's, when "Java Man" was found, have unearthed over 100 fossils of Homo Erectus going back 1.5 million years.

Komodo National Park, Indonesia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Significance: The volcanic island is the only place in the world where the well-known Komodo Dragons exist in the wild. They descend from a lizard that existed at the time of the dinosaurs. They grow up to 2-3 meters long.
