SGang Gwaay - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Place: SGang Gwaay, British Columbia
Weather: Overcast with rain showers at times, 54/62F
Route: Day trip on ferry from Prince Rupert to Queen Charlotte Islands.
Significance: SGang Gwaay is a small island in what is now called the Queen Charlotte Islands off the west coast of British Columbia. The Haida people were the original inhabitants of these islands. As is the story for Native Americans in many places disease from Europeans devastated their population and they were forced to leave the island in the 1880's. What is left behind are long houses, mortuary, and memorial poles. The memorial poles are meant to honor their ancestors and chiefs.
