Significance: A city name familiar to most Europeans and Americans - yet most people probably have no idea where it is - and according to some polling, many think that it doesn't even exist. Like Gao it was an important city in the Saharan trade route of salt and gold. It has been an important place for Islam and education since the 13th century.
