Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Malta - UNESCO World Heritage Site

 Place: Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, Malta

Weather: Sun and a few passing clouds, 54/63F.

Route: From Valletta 7.5 km on Route 6.

Significance: This underground cemetery was built between 4,000 and 2,500 BC.  Initially it was probably a sanctuary, but eventually became a necropolis with over 7,000 individuals buried there. The soft limestone was excavated using stone tools and even antlers.
