Significance: Valparaiso was founded in 1536 and reached the height of its importance as a port city in the late 18th and early 19th century. Many of the buildings from that time period are present today. The dramatic hills rising from the sea have numerous "ascensors" - which are either finculars or even normal elevators. There are also many colorfully painted houses. Like Mendoza on the other side of the Andes - Valparaiso is also considered one of the nine "wine capitals" of the world.
