If I could only go to one place in New Orleans it would be Frenchmen Street - this is a place I've actually been.
There are at least a half-dozen jazz clubs along three blocks that have the best music in New Orleans, plus plenty of street musicians. Snug Harbor, where the late great Ellis Marsalis had his weekly gig is on Frenchmen Street. It's not just the music - there are two outdoor art markets with a lot of quality visual art of all kinds. It is on the edge of the French Quarter, but it is different. You won't see college kids with "yards" of frozen drinks walking around like on Bourbon street. It feels like you've found the beating artistic heart of the city.
