Significance: Genoa was one of the world's great city states in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Bank of St. George, founded in 1407 is the oldest deposit bank in the world. During its economic height in the 16th century new streets and luxury residences built to host international state visits (Strade Nuove and Palazzi dei Rolli) are the center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
