Population: 59,358Significance: In 29 B.C., under the leadership of Emperor Augustus, Rome overtook all of the Iberian peninsula. Merida was one of the most important centers of power for the Romans. There are still many buildings standing from Roman times, including a bridge, amphitheatre, circus and water supply system.
