Verona, Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Population: 259,608

Significance: There are remaining examples of architecture from Roman times to the 18th century. Its height was during the 13th and 14th centuries when it was ruled by Scaliger family. The city had strong internal divisions between those who supported the pope vs those who supported the holy roman emperor. These divisions were dramatized in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
