Significance: The Spanish conquered the Mayan city of Can Peche and built the city of Campeche on its ruins.  It was the most important port city on the Yucatan Peninsula from the 16th to 19th centuries. It was a frequent target of pirates and the fortifications in the town were built starting in 1686 to defend against these attacks.
