Significance: This national park is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites that was picked for both cultural and natural criteria. Tikal was a major Mayan center - with a population of at least 50,000. It existed for 1,000 years until, it appears that population outstripped resources - the people left and the jungle returned.
