Tikal National Park, Guatemala - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Place: Tikal National Park, Guatemala

Weather: Sunshine and clouds mixed, 73/95F.

Route: From Belize City 229 km WSW on Western Highway and CA 13.

Significance: This national park is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites that was picked for both cultural and natural criteria. Tikal was a major Mayan center - with a population of at least 50,000. It existed for 1,000 years until, it appears that population outstripped resources - the people left and the jungle returned. Jaguar and Puma now prowl the forests
