Route: From Panama Canal 106 km NNE on route 9.
Significance: This string of fortifications on the Atlantic side of Panama were as important as the fortifications in Veracruz (Mexico), Cuba, and Cartenga (Columbia) in protecting Spanish trade routes in the 17th and 18th centuries. There was a large trade fair held in Portobelo during that time period that brought people from all over the Caribbean.Website: UNESCO World Heritage Site
