Oaxaca Historic Centre and Archaeological Site of Mt Alban - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Population: 300,050 (2014)

Significance: The ruins on Mt. Alban are from a succession of mesoamerican civilizations (Olmec, Zapatec, Mixtec) over a period of 1300 years from 500 BCE to 850 CE. The mountain was considered sacred and there are many ceremonial buildings still standing today.
The city of Oaxaca was settled by the Spanish in 1529 and includes many works of art and architecture from the 16th to 19th centuries.  It still has the same gridwork town planning from the 16th century.
