Cuenca, Ecuador - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Population: 329,928 (2010)

Significance: Cuenca was founded in 1557 on the ruins of the Native American city of Pumapungo. The city maintains the original layout designed using guidelines from Charles V of Spain. Among the architecture are two cathedrals and a Carmelite monastery.  There is also the archaeological site of Pumapungo.
