Place: National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro, Colombia

Route: From Bogata 475 km south on 68, 45, and 37.
Significance: Our first pre-Columbian site that we'll visit in South America. The site is best known for large underground (tierradentro) tombs, which are decorated similarly to the homes of the period - showing the connection between the above ground living and the below ground dead. The structures were carved out of a volcanic tuff between 600-900 CE.Website: UNESCO World Heritage Site
